SFD Newsletter 12/14/2007

Hey all.

You have in front of you the first SFD monthly newsletter. Okay, no, you're right - it's not the first. But it's the first *organized* newsletter, intended to update members about all the upcoming events for the month, news, and whatever else is interesting enough to catch our attention. This first one is kind of lame - just pointing out a few new features in the forum - but it's the holidays. January will bring much more, and in February... well, we all know what happens then. And if you don't, then you'd better stay tuned!

If you *didn't* receive this in your inbox, make sure that the email address you have on file still works, and that it's accurate. Then make sure it's not stuck in a junk mail filter. If you still didn't get it, let a board admin know (PM me) and we'll get you straightened out. Either way, no need to worry, because we'll be posting every month's newsletter in the forum for everyone to read, as well... however, the emailed newsletter will have additional information, including info on group buys, deals, etc. so you'll probably want to nab that. I'm just sayin'...

********************************************************************************
**************

I added some extra super fancy functionality to the forum that some of you may have noticed... or may not have noticed. If you click on a member's name, it will now take you to an 'extended profile'. But what does it all meeeeaaan Basil?

It's very simple. Those of you familiar with social networking sites will notice the similarity. That's because I've added a social networking element to the board, in hopes that this will bring everyone even closer together and build an even stronger sense of community, even with those people that aren't local yet are proud to be part of SFD.

There's lots of new features involved in this, and now you can even upload a personal picture. To control all the different settings and change your profile, just click on the "My Controls" link found at the top. Go forth and add your friends, contact people, get involved.

********************************************************************************
**************

In other news, I removed the blog functionality from the board in an effort to streamline it. I'm not sure many people knew it was there, and I'm very sure that nobody was using it. When I'd originally put it up, it was intended as a place where people who were doing DIY or had project cars could keep the rest of the community up to date, so to speak. However, I don't think a single, solitary person ever used it. As such, I sliced it out.

IF people are interested in using it, let me know (PM me or just reply to this topic) and I'll plug it all back in. I just ran into it during the course of my project, and figured it was an unnecessary bit o' fluff.

********************************************************************************
**************

The holidays are right around the corner for some of us (and in progress for others), so South Florida Dubs would like to wish each and every one of you a Happy Holidays!

I'm gonna do some damage

Just so everyone's prepared...

I'll be doing some damage to the forum (updating, upgrading, and upchucking) over the next couple of days. It should be painless and fast, and there ought not be any *real* problems that prevent people from using the forum...

That being said, anybody who knows anything about development knows that the above statement is a total lie. It will be extremely painful, stressful, and unbelievably time consuming. It will fuck my world up in ways I can't begin to describe. I will probably go bald and my eyebrows will fall out. I will learn new languages just so I can curse in them.

So! The heads up is delivered. Ideally (theoretically) there will be some solid improvements in performance and looks. Bear with us while we hammer away, and when the dust settles it will be for the better, I promise.

If anybody has any immediate questions or concerns about this, you can email me, or simply reply to this post.

Again: I promise to make every effort to make this as seamless as possible.

The SFD Announcements Board

Welcome to the South Florida Dubs Announcements board. In this forum you'll find all the latest news and announcements on upcoming events, bbq's, and things of interest.

All posts are moderated! What this means is that when you finish your post and hit "Submit", it's in a queue and awaits a moderator's approval. We do this for a number of reasons:

It keeps things clean and organized.

It keeps unauthorized posts from hijacking the forum.

It keeps irrelevant posts from cluttering up this very specifically purposed forum.

Events can (and should) be announced, if they're relevant to SFD. They should also be entered into the calendar (that way it shows up for everyone.) If you're feeling lonely and want to go out on Friday night, that doesn't qualify as an "event", per se - and it should be posted in the Community Forum.

Also, please make sure to keep announcements that are relevant to the group. Announcing that you just got your suspension done is exciting, but should also be posted in the Community Forum.

If you're not sure, don't worry - the moderators are here to make those determinations. But make our job a little bit easier, help us out, and try to post in the right place. Also, if you've posted here and don't see your post immediately, don't post it again... remember, it's just waiting validation.

Thanks for all your support... let's keep this thing going!

SFL GTG #15

Taken from SFLGTG.com

The 2007 SFL GTG planning is well underway.

Last year's event brought us well over 700 cars from all over the US, and even many from Canada; we're hoping to see all these people as well as many new faces so make your plans, schedule your time off, and bring your friends!

Remember, our event is just that; our event. If it wasn't for the heart in the dubber community, we couldn't make it happen. So if you've got a car club, a group of buddies, or fly solo and would like to be a part of the SFL GTG, make sure you get involved and volunteer to help us run the event. It's the best way to meet new people, have a great time, and give a little back.

This site will be updated frequently with new information as we get closer to the event date. You'll find sponsor info, volunteer info, directions, links to caravan threads, links to accommodation arrangements, pictures, as well as answers to all of your questions. There's also a thread on VWVortex.com with up-to-the-minute information.

So stay tuned; you'll be glad you did.

This event is open to all Volkswagen and Audi enthusiasts. The main-grounds parking will be reserved for owners/drivers of air-cooled or water-cooled Volkswagen or Audi models of any vintage. Parking is available along the perimeter of the event for non-VW/Audi driving guests.

With over 700 cars and over 1200 people attending our last show, and even more expected this year, the South Florida Get Together has fast become one of the largest VW/Audi shows in the US! Euro Tuner magazine has covered the past four events. People are coming from all across the Eastern seaboard for this event! With the park located within 30 minutes of South Beach, downtown Miami, and the Fort Lauderdale beaches, out-of-towners can enjoy a full Florida vacation weekend of sun and sea, or nightlife and debauchery!

RSS Feeds are now active!

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary (depends on who you ask). What does this mean?

It means that if you have an RSS News Aggregator program (and there's no shortage of them out there) you can now get feeds for each of the major sections of the South Florida Dubs forum. What's the advantage? Well, offline browsing is simplified, you can keep updated on new posts and information without necessarily sifting through the site, and all this information is provided in a very easy-to-read, simple format. Find a post you think might be interested? Click on it in your RSS News Aggregator software and it'll take you straight to the site and the post in question. It's Good Stuff.

The more technologically-minded will already know what I'm talking about, and there's a chance they might even cheer. The less technologically-inclined need to try it out in order to appreciate it, so I'll have a little tutorial in the F.A.Q, or click here: RSS Feed Tutorial.

Where's the links to these delicious feeds? Look at the bottom left-hand corner of the forum - you'll see a bright orange button that says "RSS". Click it, and choose your section. It should automagically load it up in your RSS reader of choice.

South Florida Dubs H2O Trip

I know a bunch of us are planning on heading up to H20, and most of us know at least part of the details - but maybe we should get it down in writing so everybody knows what's up, what the deal is, what the plan is, how much it's gonna cost, etc. I'm gonna get the ball rolling by putting down what I know about the trip, and people can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong... thing about it is, the details keep changing! So here goes:

September 22th-25th will be the trip's duration, from what I've come to understand. We'll be training it up and driving on the way back down. The cost of the train is... I think... $180/car, plus some cost per person. The train is on a schedule, hence our inability to train it back as well (some people gotta work!) Where we'll all be staying is a bit in question, I believe, but there was talk about it, I know that much.

Anyway, other details include 2 heads to a car, and who know what else? People please feel free to add to this if you know more...

South Florida GTG #14 - Feb. 25th 2006

QUOTE (TwoLitreVW)

Well, looks like it's about that time again.

The 2006 SFL GTG planning is well underway. We've had to make a few changes and adjustments for #14 due to South Florida getting owned by some hurricanes, but we're still going to be doing our thing just like every year.

One of the most notable changes is the location; the event has been relocated to Amelia Earhart Park in Miami-Dade County. It's only a few minutes south from the previous location and has plenty to offer its attendants.

We're shaking the sponsor tree again to make sure we bring back the same great participants we've had in the past as well as new vendors who may have something to offer our loyal attendees.

Last year's event brought us well over 700 cars from all over the US, and even a couple from Canada; we're hoping to see some repeat visitors as well as some new faces. So make your plans, schedule your time off, and bring your friends!

This post will be updated frequently with new information as we get closer to the event date. You'll find sponsor info, volunteer info, directions, links to caravan threads, links to accommodation arrangements, pictures, as well as answers to all of your questions.

So stay tuned; you'll be glad you did.

___________________

For the noobs to the event:

This event is open to all Volkswagen and Audi enthusiasts. The main-grounds parking will be reserved for owners/drivers of air-cooled or water-cooled Volkswagen or Audi models of any vintage. Parking is available along the perimeter of the event for non-VW/Audi driving guests.

The South Florida Get Together remains unique among car shows and get-togethers by remaining FREE to attend and open to all ages! While Amelia Earhart Park has a $1 admission fee, parking and access to the event grounds is free. Food and drinks will be available - for $5 you can purchase a food ticket which will give you unlimited food and drink (as long as supplies last) AND entry into our raffle giveaway! Our unique (and collectible) T-shirts will be available before and during the event -- watch for a separate thread when the shirts become available, and look for our staff selling the shirts at local weekly or monthly gatherings before the GTG! Dozens of well-known sponsors will be attending the event as vendors and donating prizes for the raffle and several vendors will even offer installation on-site with their own expert staff.

With over 700 cars and over 1200 people attending our last show, and even more expected this year, the South Florida Get Together has fast become one of the largest VW/Audi shows in the US! Euro Tuner magazine has covered the past three events. People are coming from all across the Eastern seaboard for this event! With the park located within 30 minutes of South Beach, downtown Miami, and the Fort Lauderdale beaches, out-of-towners can enjoy a full Florida vacation weekend of sun and sea, or nightlife and debauchery!

-Justin Miller, founder of the SFL GTG

for pictures and info on past events, visit our website:
http://www.sflgtg.com
